The Chimfunshi Wildlife Sanctuary Primate Project

Why the Chimfunshi Wildlife Chimpanzee Orphanage?
In the words of Shelia Siddle, Co Founder Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage, ‘Because these aren’t just animals to Dave and I. They are precious individuals who came to us in a time of need and allowed us to help them, who had the nobility and strength of character to permit us to get close. I often say they forgive us and I believe it’s true’.

The current living conditions The current living conditions The current living conditions The current living conditions        This is how the chimpazees currently live, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. No sunshine, no grass, no freedom

The Problem

Since about 2005 Charles, Leben, George and Grumps have been locked inside on cold concrete floors with nothing more than a tyre and a handful of hay. Think about 5 years locked in your bedroom, the devastating impact this would have on your mental health is beyond imagination.

The majority of the 120 chimpanzees at Chimfunshi live in amazing 500 acre enclosures and so are given the opportunity to live as naturally as possible. Unfortunately due to their propensity to climb over the electric fence, these four fully grown male chimps are confined to a frustrating life in a den about the size of an average bedroom.

Like most wildlife sanctuaries globally, lack of income at Chimfunshi is a significant problem. They rely on fundraising and support from people who simply care enough to donate and help improve the conditions for these highly intelligent animals, who surely deserve better. Humans have created this problem, so it is up to us to help solve it.

The Solution

After a recent visit to Chimfunshi it is evident now more than ever how important it is to build a fully enclosed outdoor area for Charles, Leben, Grumps and George. The change in their personalities from previously interactive to completely apathetic is devastating to see.

Save The Primates, within the next 6 months is committed to begin building a new enclosure for the boys. This is only possible because of all the donations received so far. But it doesn’t stop there the more money we raise the larger the space can be, so please, help us help the boys.
